At Sustainable Salons, we’ve collected more than 285,000 ponytails since 2015. These ponytails are donated to our wigmaker partners to be crafted into medical wigs for people experiencing medically induced hair loss.

Wigs can be life-changing, providing confidence and a sense of normality to those affected. Up to 20 ponytails are needed to make just one wig, so every donation makes a difference!

One of the incredible wigmakers we work with is Salon T, Australia’s only specialist salon dedicated to supporting people with trichotillomania. We spoke with Zakdon, founder of Salon T, to learn more about this condition and how the Sustainable Salons network supports it through our ponytail donation program.

What is Trichotillomania?

"Trichotillomania, or ‘trich’, is a condition where individuals have a compulsive urge to pull out their hair. The name comes from the Greek words “tricho” (hair), “tillo” (to pull), and “mania” (compulsion). This can lead to significant hair loss and emotional distress, affecting self-esteem and daily life."

How many Australians experience Trichotillomania?

"It’s estimated that 1–2% of Australians are affected by trichotillomania, which means over 200,000 people experience this challenge every year."

How does Salon T support people with Trichotillomania?

"At Salon T, we are the only full-service specialist salon for trichotillomania in Australia. We provide:

  • Tailored hair loss solutions designed specifically for trich clients.
  • Discreet, judgment-free consultations to create a safe space for our clients.

A purpose-built salon environment designed to make clients feel comfortable and supported."

What impact does this support have on clients?

"With a Melbourne-based salon and an Online/Virtual Salon, we can assist clients across Australia. Our personalised approach has helped clients regain confidence and control over their hair journey."

“Before Salon T, I felt overwhelmed by my hair loss. Their personalised care restored my hair and my self-confidence.”

How did the collaboration between Sustainable Salons and Salon T begin?

"I met Paul (co-founder of Sustainable Salons) and shared my vision for supporting Australia’s trich community. Sustainable Salons' ponytail donation program was a perfect match, and together, we’ve created real, lasting change."

My clients are forever grateful for the hair donors. This hair truly transforms their lives.

- Zakdon, Salon T

What happens to donated ponytails?

"Hair donated to Sustainable Salons is transformed into high-quality, trich-specific hairpieces and wigs. These wigs provide life-changing solutions for people experiencing hair loss due to trichotillomania, alopecia, and other medical conditions."

How can salon professionals help?

"Salon professionals can make a huge difference by:

  • Educating themselves and their teams about trichotillomania to better support affected clients.
  • Visiting Salon T’s website to learn more about recognising and understanding trichotillomania.
  • Encouraging hair donations—growing and donating hair can help someone receive their first wig.
  • Spreading awareness in the salon community and advocating for those with medically induced hair loss."

"By taking small steps to learn and raise awareness, salons can make a meaningful impact in the lives of people with trichotillomania."
