We have to start somewhere
Our journey begins with the crucial step of separating and collecting. Sustainable Salons collects resources from over 1,500 members across Australia and New Zealand that would otherwise end up in landfill, and through recycling and repurposing, these resources find new life. Sustainable Salons has so far diverted over 1,700,000+kg of resources, including paper, metals, plastic, hair, chemicals, e-waste, and more. Thanks to the unwavering commitment of our members over the past eight years, our closed-loop process has a solid foundation.
Purchasing recycled products has multiple advantages for individuals and the environment. It promotes a circular economy, where materials are reused and reprocessed, reducing the need for new products and conserving valuable resources. By choosing recycled goods, we contribute to the preservation of forests, water sources, and wildlife habitats. Additionally, by reducing waste and minimising pollution, we actively participate in creating a more sustainable and greener future for generations to come.
A collaborative approach to recycling
In recent years, people have become more aware of where their products come from and where they are spending their money. More and more people are asking themselves, "What can we do with these resources? How can we value these resources instead of burying them in the ground?" This newfound perspective has sparked innovation among small businesses, universities, larger manufacturers, and even governments, collectively working together to create a closed-loop process, and exploring new ways to access recyclable materials and produce new products.
Transforming resources into innovation
Once we have a single, viable, and recyclable material, the possibilities are endless. At Sustainable Salons, our closed-loop mission is progressing rapidly. We recently introduced our 100% recycled plastic Sustainable Salons Comb at Hair Festival and we now have seven products in our closed-loop range, from dog leashes, plant pots, coasters and more. But we're not stopping there. As an innovative company, we are always looking for new ideas to close the loop, providing real and effective solutions.
It's time to close the loop—buy recycled!
Recognising the true value
In today's consumer-driven world, we have been conditioned to prioritise convenience and affordability. However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of supporting local manufacturing and production. It is crucial to reconsider our perception of value, understanding that the true cost of a product extends beyond its price tag. By acknowledging the risks and investments made by local manufacturers and innovators, we can appreciate the value of their sustainable practices and contribute to a more sustainable future.
It’s not recycled unless you buy recycled
If we don't buy recycled products, we risk breaking the loop entirely. Admittedly, changing our habits is challenging. It's difficult to depart from what we know and feel comfortable with. Yet now, for example, reusable coffee cups have become an indispensable part of our lives. The same journey awaits us in other purchasing decisions. The beauty of many recycled products is that they are designed and made locally. This means these brands employ local people, prioritise quality (because there's a face behind the product), and eagerly seek your feedback to create products that truly align with your needs and values.
So, the next time you find yourself "just window shopping," add recycled items to your cart. It's a guilt-free choice that allows you to contribute to Making Sustainability Reality.
